The Performing Arts Series at the University of Nevada, Reno is back on stage with six captivating, in-person performances.
“This season’s lineup of extraordinary artists, performing in-person from our very own our stage, will allow us all, once again to experience the transformative power of the arts,” Shoshana Zeldner, program manager with the School of the Arts, said. “Each performance is sure to fill our evenings with joy, intrigue and inspiration.”
On Thursday, Sept. 9, the series welcomes audiences back to the stage with out-of-this-world performer and jazz prodigy, Grace Kelly, at the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and food and beverages will be available from emPienada, CosaNostraSF and The Tap Wagon. Kelly will take the stage at 7:30 p.m., under the stars.
Kelly will also be holding a free meet-and-greet with University students at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at The Center in the Joe Crowley Student Union (Third Floor). Students will have the chance to ask Kelly their questions in an intimate setting, win free tickets to her Sept. 9 performance, and even hear a tune or two.
The brilliant saxophonist, singer, songwriter and composer has racked up a lifetime worth of achievements and is still in her 20s. Kelly’s impressive resume includes 13 acclaimed albums, sold-out concerts, awards, performing in the house band for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and at the Hollywood Bowl, to name a few. Featured by Vanity Fair magazine as a millennial shaking up the jazz world, Kelly’s state-of-the-art brand of electro jazz-pop and inventive digital content are pushing her to the forefront of the fusion scene.
The season will continue in Nightingale Concert hall with contemporary dance from Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company on Thursday, Oct.14, 2021; the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center performing the complete Brandenburg Concertos, co-presented with Apex Concerts, on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021; the Irish band Goitse on Thursday, Feb 24, 2022; renowned a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey In The Rock on Thursday, March 10, 2022; and jazz vocalist Michael Mayo performing alongside the faculty ensemble, The Collective on Thursday, April 28, 2022.
“The arts have been challenged in so many ways throughout the past year-and-a-half and we understand just how much we all want and need art in our daily lives," Zeldner said. "We are committed to continuing to present exceptional arts opportunities in our community and will adapt, as needed, throughout the season to ensure a safe experience for all event attendees.”
Four of the performances will also be livestreamed and available for on-demand viewing for three days. Access to these performances is included with all in-person ticket purchases and available to those who can only participate virtually for $15. Livestreamed performances include Rire-Woodbury Dance Company, Goitse, Sweet Honey In The Rock and Michael Mayo + The Collective.
Performing Arts Series season tickets, fall and spring 3-packs, and individual tickets are now available online, by phone through Lawlor Events Center (775-784-4444) or in-person at the Lawlor Events Center Box Office (10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, 1500 N. տƵ St. Reno, lower level entrance).
Grace Kelly individual tickets are $20/$36 (Adult), $18/$31 (Senior/UNR Faculty and Staff) and $12/$16 (Youth). University student tickets to all performances are $5 and must be purchased in-person at the Lawlor Events Center or at the box office the night of the show (at the event venue, opens one hour before the performance).
Season subscribers receive tickets to all six performances, save 12%, receive the best seats in the house and have access to subscriber-only events and the livestream of each performance (available for three days to select performances). Season tickets are $190 (Adult), $163 (Senior/UNR Faculty and Staff) and $84 (Youth) and fall and spring 3-packs are $100 (Adult), $86 (Senior/UNR Faculty and Staff) and $44 (Youth).
In addition to the Performing Arts Series, the School of the Arts presents the Reno Jazz Festival and Lake Tahoe Music Camp as well as world-class visual art exhibitions, musical performances, theatre productions, dance concerts and public arts events presented by the departments of Art, Music, and Theatre and Dance. The School of the Arts, as well as the College of Liberal Arts, encourage broad campus and community participation in the arts through numerous performances, lectures, exhibitions, core courses and outreach activities that explore diverse cultures and encourage lifelong learning. The School of the Art’s degree programs provide a strong foundation in a range of artistic disciplines, enabling students to contribute as artists, educators and scholars at the local level and beyond.
