The Department of Art, Art History & Design in the College of Liberal Arts is thrilled to invite the community for a celebration and soft opening of Eric J. García's new mural on Thursday, June 6, at 5 p.m.
Eric J. García, the Spring 2024 Artist-in-Residence, has painted a 3-story, 1,600-square-foot mural within the Church Fine Arts building courtyard. This mural, a part of the University of Nevada, Reno’s sesquicentennial celebration, aims to depict the rich history and diverse culture of our community. García will collaborate with the Black Rock Press to produce a limited-edition hand-printed broadside poster of the mural design.
García has been painting the mural during the summer mini-session (May 20 through June 7) while working with students enrolled in the Wall Works (ART 405) course. These students assisted in painting and learned about the history and production of public art.

About Eric J. García
Eric J. García uses history and a graphic style to create political art that challenges our understanding of the present. His work, which includes sculpture, mixed media installations, murals, printmaking and controversial political cartoons, aims to provoke viewers to question sources of power and the whitewashing of history. Garcia holds a BFA with a minor in Chicano studies from the University of New Mexico and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
He is a core member of the printmaking collective Instituto Gráfico de Chicago, a new member of the Justseeds Cooperative, part of the emerging Veteran Art Movement and a dedicated teaching artist. Garcia’s work has been exhibited nationally and is included in the National Museum of Mexican Art collections, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
