Living and giving in Reno

Welcome to Reno, one of the West Coast's best-kept secrets. Our city has 252 days on average of sunshine, enabling a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities year-round. Reno's gambling roots and reputation has hidden an exciting outdoor destination for water sports, skiing, hot springs, hiking and rock climbing – as well as gourmet locally-produced food, arts, music and culture.

Welcome to "The Biggest Little City in the World"

The Reno-Lake Tahoe area is a recreational, cultural, and historic mecca. Reno's downtown redevelopment has transformed the face of the city in dramatic ways: Riverwalk, kayak park, and the Reno Aces Ballpark to name a few. To the west, the Sierra Nevada rise abruptly into a mountain zone of pine forests, alpine meadows, lakes and splashing streams. To the east, the Great Basin opens up to wide open and empty spaces, dry landscapes, brown mountain ranges and sagebrush plains. In a single day you can ski in the morning, kayak in downtown Reno in the afternoon, take a quick mountain bike ride on Peavine Peak, and top it off with drinks, dinner and a show that night. If that isn't enough, Lake Tahoe is less than an hour away with its own unique combination of indoor and outdoor activities.

International students: Need help getting established?

The Graduate Student Association offers interest-free loans to incoming international graduate students to help make the transition from your home country to your new life in Reno.  New residents sometimes experience unexpected expenses during this transitional period and the focus and intent of the program is to provide assistance in obtaining set-up expenses. Students may apply for up to $500 in funding. All loans must be repaid within one academic year (10 months).
