Camp descriptions and schedule

Engineering Everywhere! Introduction to engineering. For ages 12-14

Cost: $400

Engineering is everywhere-from the roads we drive on to the medicine we take to the computers we use. Participants will design, build and test projects, while learning about various fields in engineering.

  • June 24-28, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Engineering Exploration: Introduction to engineering. For ages 15-17

Cost: $400

Participants will explore various fields of engineering available at UNR, including Mechanical, Civil, Cybersecurity, and Biomedical Engineering. They will have the opportunity to tour labs, meet with the Aerospace Engineering club, and embark on engaging field trips. During the program, participants will take part in hands-on lessons, interesting lectures, and team-building exercises aimed at problem identification. Through the engineering design process, they will conceptualize, construct, and test models, with a focus on the significance of collaborative teamwork among engineers.

What this camp offers:

  • Hands-on activities led by UNR Faculty and College of Engineering students, fostering practical skill development. Participants will engage in activities such as building a tiny trebuchet to apply mechanical engineering principles and constructing a tall tower to utilize civil engineering skills.
  • Field trips providing firsthand exposure to engineers in action within real-world contexts, enriching participants' understanding of the profession.
  • Collaboration activities centered on addressing authentic engineering challenges, highlighting the importance of teamwork in achieving solutions.

  • July 8-12, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Engineering Adventures: Introduction to engineering in the outdoors. For ages 12-14

Cost: $480

Participants will enjoy the Sierra Nevada through field trips and meetings with outdoor engineering experts. We are going to explore what it means to be an engineer who creates rock climbing equipment, mountain bikes, outdoor clothing and more.

  • July 15-19, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Civil and Environmental Engineering by J-U-B Engineering. For ages 15-17

Cost: $400

Civil and Environmental Engineers ensure that our infrastructure, from the roads or bridges we drive on to the buildings we live and work in, are safe. They maintain our water ways and supplies, provide safe drinking water, and design stormwater systems to prevent flooding. They are essential for our society. This camp offers students a chance to learn the ins and outs of Civil and Environmental Engineering while discovering solutions to engineering challenges by following the engineering design process. They will meet with University of Nevada, Reno faculty and students to learn about key practices that will enhance critical thinking, time management, and problem-solving skills.

What this camp offers:

  • Engineering labs and activities led by UNR CEE Faculty: Participants will gain exposure to the various programs of Civil and
  • Environmental Engineering offered at UNR. Activities include making your own concrete canoe, utilizing state-of-the-art driving simulators, and engaging in 3D printing projects.
  • Field trip to witness firsthand the work of Civil and Environmental Engineers in action.

  • July 22-26, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
