Advising assessment
In Fall 2019, the Provost directed the Advising Leads group to develop a way to systematically assess academic advising across all ten academic colleges. The colleges developed learning outcomes for the first three advising appointments, which are required for all students.

Academic advising at Orientation
As a result of academic advising AT orientation, students will be able to do the following:
- Locate advisor's contact information
- Demonstrate how to login to MyNevada
- Define degree requirements for a bachelors degree
- Number of units required for graduation
- Core curriculum
- Major
Academic advising at NevadaFIT
As a result of academic advising at NevadaFIT, students will be able to do the following:
- Utilize the academic calendar to be aware of important deadlines
- Describe the role of an advisors (professional vs. faculty)
- Schedule an advising appointment utilizing Navigate
Academic advising during first-year
As a result of academic advising during first-year, students will be able to do the following:
- Recognize General Education Core Objectives 1-8 requirements
- Enroll themselves in courses for future terms
- Describe the reason they are in college
- Locate their enrollment date in MyNevada
- Demonstrate how to use class search in MyNevada to identify core courses
- Navigate the General Catalog
Academic advising during sophomore year
As a result of academic advising during sophomore year, students will be able to do the following:
- Acknowledge that their Academic Requirements Report, or degree audit, is their official degree plan that houses all the requirements they must complete in order to graduate.
- Recall course recommendations made by the academic advisor during their appointment.
- Employ help seeking behaviors to contact their academic advisors with follow-up questions.
- Acknowledge that earning a University cumulative GPA of less than 2.0 will result in being placed in academic recovery.
- Agree that the advisor they worked with respected all shared aspects of their identity during the advising appointment
Advising adjustments during COVID-19
During the initial development and implementation of advising learning outcomes, the COVID-19 pandemic began. Due to the constantly changing nature of higher education at that time, advising leads made necessary adaptations and adjustments to assess the learning outcomes and ensure the safety of both the student and advisor safety.
Developed a flipped classroom model. Advising developed a flipped classroom model for Orientation. Advisors created a pre-advising course in our learning management system (LMS) that students completed prior to attending a virtual advising appointment at Orientation. This course helped prepare students prior to attending that advising appointment. After attending the advising appointment and completing the pre-advising course, they completed a Qualtrics survey to assess their learning and advising session.
Established virtual meetings. To continue our assessment of advising during the time of COVID-19, we met with students online via Zoom or Microsoft teams during the academic terms. At the end of advising sessions we would ask students to complete another Qualtrics survey. This survey was built specifically to assess how students were understanding the learning outcomes.
Implemented a LMS module for NevadaFIT. Finally, when NevadaFIT returned in Summer 2021, the advisors developed a module, "University 101," to be used in the NevadaFIT homework LMS course. The students took a quiz in the course to assess their learning.
Engaging in all three opportunities for feedback allows for multiple check points on students learning within the first year.
Survey results
Using the results of the Qualtrics surveys, it is clear our students are meeting the learning outcomes. The following is a summary of the Qualtrics survey data for our first three years.
2020-2021
1,944 students completed the survey.
- 99% of the students are confident in knowing how to login to MyNevada without assistance.
- 77% of the students agree that they feel comfortable explaining how my Fall classes meet my degree requirements.
- 86% of the students know their degree requirements they need to complete in order to graduate.
- 87% of the students agree that the advising session taught them how to look for their advisor's contact information.
Due to COVID-19, NevadaFIT was not held in the fall of 2020.
1,040 students completed the survey.
- 93% of the students agreed that their advisor taught them to recognize silver core requirements 1 through 8.
- 87% of the students agreed that their advisor taught them how to do an Advanced Search in MyNevada
- 95% of the students agreed that their advisor taught them how to find our enrollment dates in MyNevada.
- 89% of the students agreed that their advisor discussed their purpose at Nevada.
- 93% of the students agreed that their advisor taught them how to navigate the general catalog.
- 95% of the students agreed that their advisor taught them how to utilize the general catalog and to locate degree requirements.
2021-2022
1,853 students completed the survey.
- 99% of the students are confident in knowing how to login to MyNevada without assistance.
- 57 % of the students agree that they feel comfortable explaining how my Fall classes meet my degree requirements.
- 85 % of the students know their degree requirements they need to complete in order to graduate.
- 86% of the students agree that the advising session taught them how to look for their advisor's contact information.
- 65% of students earned a 5 or above for the University 101 quiz. The quiz is out of 6 points

- 90% of the students agreed that their advisor taught them to recognize silver core requirements 1 through 8.
- 91% of the students agreed that their advisor taught them how to do an Advanced Search in MyNevada

2,180 students completed the survey.

- 92% of the students know their degree requirements they need to complete in order to graduate.
- 93% of the students agree that the advising session taught them how to look for their advisor's contact information.
- 76% of students earned a 5 or above for the University 101 quiz. The quiz is out of 6 points
