Dear Wolf Pack Family,

Happy 148th Birthday to the University of Nevada, Reno!

On October 12, 1874, the University of Nevada opened its doors to seven students in Elko, Nevada. Although an 1885 legislative bill would move the University to Reno, this historic moment in 1874 marked the humble beginnings of the State of Nevada’s original land grant university situated on the traditional homelands of the Northern Paiute, Washoe, Western Shoshone and Southern Paiute peoples. Since that fall day in 1874, the University has relocated to Reno, grown to become a Tier 1, Carnegie R1 “Very High Research,” NCAA Division 1, nationally recognized, and highly diverse University that enrolls more than 20,000 students each year. We have accomplished so much since that first day in 1874, and we have an incredible future ahead of us.

University's Sesquicentennial celebration

The University of Nevada, Reno will be celebrating its 150th anniversary on October 12, 2024. The University’s Sesquicentennial will provide opportunities to come together to honor our University’s past, recognize our milestones, and look to the future. The University’s extensive and diverse history will be celebrated for an entire year starting October 12, 2023 and concluding October 12, 2024.

Your participation in the Sesquicentennial Celebration is vital to creating vibrant and inclusive events for the University, the northern Nevada community, the State of Nevada, and our University community located around the world. The University’s Senior Leadership Team, Faculty Senate, and Staff Employees Council have been asked to lead discussions that will contribute to the development of the Sesquicentennial activities. ASUN, GSA and other student groups are being encouraged to develop ideas. We have already received a number of great ideas like creating a Wolf Pack license plate, planting trees, and creating a 150-year historical video.

As part of the Wolf Pack Family, you are involved in numerous University communities; please talk with your colleagues and fellow students, and think of how the affinity group, academic area, advisory committee, alumni chapter, beautification team, community liaison, business leader or other area of interest might play a role in the University’s Sesquicentennial.

Ideas are being gathered now and will continue to be gathered throughout the coming year as we use October 2022 to September 2023 to plan for the Sesquicentennial celebration. Please visit Celebrate 150 and share your thoughts on how you and your group will be part of this historic commemoration. A steering committee with University and community representatives is being formed to solicit ideas and guide the process. This is an exciting time for our Wolf Pack Community!

Go Pack!

Sincere regards,
