Dear Wolf Pack Family,

I hope you are well and finding your stride as we move forward with a busy spring semester.

February is Black History Month and serves as a time for all of us to acknowledge, celebrate and to learn more about the lasting contributions that have been made by the members of the Black community here in northern Nevada, throughout the country and the world. In recognizing and celebrating the achievements of members of the Black community, we do so knowing that experiences of the members of the Black community are changing, and with every accomplishment and history-making milestone comes the opportunity for the next generation to do even more.

And yet, as recent events in Memphis, Tennessee have demonstrated, there is a tremendous amount of work that needs to be done in our country regarding racial justice. This is why Black History Month is such an important observation for our country to make each year. It allows us to take stock of where we are as a people, what inroads have been made, and what is required of us on the road ahead as we work to achieve justice, freedom and opportunity for every individual.

Black History Month includes several special events from the Multicultural Center’s African Diaspora program, as well as , and several other student, faculty and staff groups across campus. Participating in meaningful discussions and learning about each other’s perspectives and experiences, builds a much stronger community. Embracing and elevating voices of the Black community is an important part of developing an inclusive University where each of us is seen and heard.
