is offering its online , Aug. 1 to Oct. 7. The program is ideal for anyone wanting to learn more about gardening in Nevada and is also a prerequisite for those interested in becoming a certified .
The cost is $275 and includes recorded lectures, readings, homework and online question-and-answer sessions with specialists and local gardening professionals. Live training sessions take place via Zoom, from noon to 1 p.m., Thursdays, Aug. 1 – Sept. 12, and on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Participants complete the online exam at their own pace by Oct. 7.
The certificate program includes instruction on a variety of topics, such as soils, composting, native plants, small fruits and integrated pest management. Katelyn Brinkerhoff, statewide Master Gardener coordinator, said that the online program was developed to be accessible to everyone in Nevada.
“Topics address information on gardening specific to northern Nevada, southern Nevada and our rural counties,” Brinkerhoff said. “The training is applicable to anyone wanting to start or learn more about gardening in the state.”
Besides providing practical information for home gardeners, the certificate program is a prerequisite for entering the Nevada Master Gardener Program, an Extension program designed to teach research-based Nevada gardening practices to volunteers. In turn, Master Gardeners share this knowledge through educational presentations and workshops, community events and projects, and answering gardening questions at Extension offices.
After completing their first year, Master Gardeners make an annual commitment to 10 hours of continuing education and 20 hours volunteering wherever their knowledge and skills best fit community needs.
Applications for Master Gardener training open after participants pass the Home Horticulture Certification Program final exam. Master Gardener training costs $25 and takes place Oct. 31 – Dec. 29. It includes online readings, lectures and live question-and-answer sessions, while county-specific in-person activities may also be added to the schedule.
