On Monday, Feb. 6, 2023, U.S. Congressman Ro Khanna paid a visit to the main campus of the University of Nevada, Reno. Congressman Khanna represents the 17th congressional district of California, Silicon Valley, serving his fourth term.

This visit follows a recent announcement that was made on Feb. 2, 2023, that Rep. Khanna will be the ranking member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Cyber, Innovative Technology and Information Systems in the 118th Congress.

Rep. Khanna was a key driver in the University’s partnership with TalentSprint Inc. to offer the TechWise program supported by Google in 2022, which aims to increase diversity in technology education. That program enables students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to prepare for high-growth tech careers. The virtual program includes a full program scholarship as well as a $5,000 stipend and includes a 1 on 1 Google Mentorship for 20 students from the University who are selected for the program. Participating students are part of a very exclusive cohort of just 120 students in the United States. Upon completion of the program and graduation, the students will be ready to start careers as world-class software engineers.

During his visit to campus with President Sandoval, Rep. Khanna was updated on the current success of the program so far and discussed other technology and diversity initiatives of the University.
