The speaker for this year’s College of Engineering Distinguished Lecture Series is Janet Napolitano, the former and longest-serving Secretary of Homeland Security. Napolitano's lecture will be called "Homeland Security Challenges in the Age of Covid."
Responding to the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic have presented to the way we live, work and inter-relate, Napolitano's talk will focus on our nation’s new normal, how defense of the Homeland has evolved and what we can expect in the future. From airports, checkpoints and border crossings to waterways, cyber networks and election systems, Napolitano will deconstruct the modern Homeland Security construct, challenge what we know and describe what we can expect.

Janet Napolitano is a Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley. She served as the twentieth president of the University of California, the nation’s largest public research university with ten campuses, five medical centers, three affiliated national laboratories, and a statewide agriculture and natural resources program.
Prior to joining the University of California, Professor Napolitano served as Secretary of Homeland Security from 2009 to 2013. She is a former two-term Governor of Arizona, a former Attorney General of Arizona, and a former U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona. In 2019, Napolitano published How Safe Are We? Homeland Security Since 9/11. Professor Napolitano earned her B.S. degree, summa cum laude, in Political Science from Santa Clara University, and her J.D. from the University of ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵ. She is based in Berkeley, CA.
